Posted on July 13, 2011
Here are some of the new features in Exponent Version 5. For a full list please visit the SMS website, or refer to the software update notes.
New Splash and About windows:
The new splash window has two additional areas. The content of both is pulled in from the Internet, if it is available, or from the local disk as backup. The top panel displays links to various pages on our website and important news when available. The bottom panel displays distributor contact details based on the country settings in Windows.
The user is also informed if a new version of Exponent is available for download on our website.
New help panels in many windows:
The following windows now have an extra panel on the right hand side that displays help related to the current task: Project Notes, T.A. Settings, Test Configuration, Graph Preferences.
User Defined Parameters
There is a new tab added for User Defined Parameters in the Test Configuration window. This allows users to add their own text or numeric data to the system. The numeric values can be picked up by the Macro command “Get Graph Information” so they can be used in calculations etc.
Mail To...
The active document can be attached to an empty email ready to send. For graphs, all the files selected in the list can be attached. For projects, the referenced files can also be attached and the project references changed to relative paths.
Updated Report Engine
Now supports export to HTML. Reports have RTF properties such as Title, Author, Keywords, etc.
Graph Printing
Customised graph printing can now be achieved more easily. When you select the File > Print Preview menu command when a graph window is active you will see a window appear that shows all the folders which have .rps files in them. When you select a file from the list it is opened for viewing only.
If the project has a report file specified then the window is not displayed unless you hold down the Shift key.

A blank project is created. The user is prompted for a folder and name but has the option to ignore that. The systems default macro is automatically referenced which has the Quick Calculations in it.
Help me create the new project step-by-step:
You are prompted for the name of the project and the folder location that it will be stored in.
You are next prompted for the Notes, then the T.A. Settings, the Run-A-Test parameters and finally the Graph Preferences. You can also specify what you need for macro, results and report files in the way of Copy a Default, Empty, Nothing or Copy a Specified file.
The new project and selected files are all created in the specified folder.
